The real outback, remote, rugged and ruthless. Take time and enjoy the adventure of exploring our outback. Small towns, a shadow of their previous life, survive on mining activities especially gold. In spring our wildflowers, especially the carpets of pink, white and yellow everlastings paint the landscape. Stay at an historic outback hotel or station homestead, a great stopping place on the Great Northern Highway if heading north to the rugged red Pilbara. The mining town of Newman is on the way to Karajini National Park.
Leonora and Leinster and Cue are remote mining towns with a colourful turn of the century history. Try your hand at panning or prospecting for gold. When heading south from here towards Kalgoorlie, explore Lake Ballard near Menzies where you will find magnificent sculptures in a magical salt lake setting amid mirages. Heritage trails follow tracks of the sandalwood pullers, gold prospectors and the supply trails to enormous outback sheep properties.
Take time to appreciate these remote areas and you will be well rewarded. Remember to plan your trip, as there are long distances between fuel, water supplies and accommodation. You are guaranteed to find kangaroo, emu or even turkeys!
